I’ve seen a few Midjourney selfie images on social media lately so I thought I would share a prompt to create them - one that makes them crazy realistic!
The first selfie (formally referred to as a self-portrait at the time) has been credited to Robert Cornelius in 1839. Cornelius, one of the American pioneers of photography produced a daguerreotype of himself. The first image taken in the same process as today, with the photographer holding the camera at arm’s length, was in December 1920. The five men who took the photo were the main photographers of the Byron Company, a photography studio founded in Manhattan in 1892 and still in business today.
The word “selfie” didn’t appear until more than 150 years later. The first reported “selfie” usage is involved with a drunk night out. The history of the selfie sort of goes centuries deep. While photography in general flourished, the selfie wouldn’t surface in mainstream culture until the baby-boom generation. Andy Warhol was a fan of selfies; he made self-portraits famous in his pop art in the 1960s.
Selfie culture became popular in Japan and then other East Asian countries in the 1990s, and by the 2000s, it had spread to the West. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have made selfies a ubiquitous part of modern life.
